Is the shape adjustable?

Yes, you could pull the top connector to make it the shape you want (rectangle, hexagonal, L-shape, etc). You could also make it smaller by removing panels unneeded.

Why is the top connector broken after I pulled it out?

They are locked with each other in case of missing. You can press down or pull out the top connector a little bit to keep the "fix" and "folding" status. Do not pull the whole top connector out if not necessary.

Is it secure to use on flooring?

It can be set up in our living room on Wooden flooring/Tile/Carpet, and it works great.
